Your Journey

Riding Niagara Transit

Step-by-step safety tips for every part of the trip.

Planning

  • Check schedules on our website or in the Transit app before you leave.
  • Know your stop number. You'll need it if you ever have to report something.
  • If you're travelling late at night or somewhere new, let someone know your route.
  • Check service alerts so you know about any detours or delays on your route.

Waiting

  • Use the Transit app to track the bus in real time so you know when it's close.
  • Give the driver a small wave so they know to stop. After dark, use your phone's flashlight.
  • Stand well back from the curb, especially when it's wet or slushy.
  • As the bus pulls up, form a line.

Boarding

  • Let passengers off the bus before you get on.
  • Stay back from the door, the ramp may need to come down for someone exiting.
  • Watch your step on the stairs and ramp, especially when it's wet.
  • Find your seat quickly. The bus moves once everyone has paid their fare.

Riding

  • Hold a yellow grab bar or hanging strap any time the bus is moving.
  • Only sit in priority seats if you need them. If you don't, offer them to someone who does.
  • Keep your bags or belongings out of the aisle.
  • If you feel unsafe, tell the operator at the next stop.

Exiting

  • Pull/Press the stop request early so the driver has enough time to stop safely.
  • Wait until the bus has fully stopped before you move toward the door.
  • Use the handrail on the way down the stairs.
  • Once you're off, never cross in front of the bus.
On Board

Bus Safety Features

Every part of our buses have been designed with your safety in mind.

Kneeling Suspension and Ramp

When a customer needs extra help boarding, the bus can lower itself closer to the ground and deploy a ramp at the front door, no need to lift or climb.

Wheelchair Securement

Every bus has a dedicated space with securement belts to keep wheelchairs and mobility devices safely in place while the bus is moving.

Grab Bars and Straps

Bright yellow handrails run throughout every bus. Hanging straps offer a comfortable grip if you're standing mid-bus.

Anti-Slip Flooring

Floors, stairs, and ramps use textured, slip-resistant surfaces. Ramps have raised edges to keep mobility devices secure.

CCTV Monitoring

Our buses have cameras that record inside and outside the vehicle while in service.

Emergency Exits

Every bus has rear emergency exits, roof hatches, and window escape mechanisms. Follow your operators' instructions in an emergency.

At The Stop

Stops and Shelters

Step-by-step safety tips for every part of the trip.

Bus Stops with Shelters

We maintain shelters at high-traffic stops across the region. They provide weather protection while you wait.

Stop ID Numbers

Every stop has a unique ID number. You can refer to this number when reporting something.

Phone Light

At night, if the street is relatively dark, you can wave your phone's flash light to let the driver know you're there.

Behind The Scenes

Fleet Maintenance

Every bus that rolls out for service goes through a rigorous process before it reaches your stop. Here's how we keep our fleet road-ready.

Pre-Trip Inspection

Operators inspect every bus before it leaves the garage. They check brakes, lights, doors, mirrors, the ramp, and fluid levels. A bus that doesn't pass doesn't go out.

Scheduled Maintenance

Every vehicle follows a routine maintenance schedule covering engine servicing, brake inspections, tire checks, and systems testing.

Vehicle Replacement

We retire older vehicles and replace them with newer buses. This keeps the fleet modern and reduces the risk of mechanical issues in service.

MTO Compliance

All Niagara Transit buses meet Ontario Ministry of Transportation standards. Our fleet is subject to provincial safety inspections and must pass to remain in service.
